Through a confluence of unforeseen events, I found myself in Paris last June without a hotel room at 10 o’clock at night. Fashion week was underway— along with two international conferences—and my reservation was somehow lost. A room could not be found for less than $900 US dollars. I wasn’t going to pay 900 bucks for a bed, so I decided to spend the night walking the streets of Paris. Initially, I was not happy about this. Then I thought, “This is the stuff they make movies about—enjoy!” About 2am I came upon this guy in a suit sitting against that steel pillar on a bridge with a suitcase next to him. I didn’t speak to him, but I figured he must’ve been in the same boat I was. The whole scene had a dreamlike quality. Later, when I posted this photo on Instagram, a younger follower asked me if that is the bridge that appeared in the movie Inception. It is.
